3 Questions to Find a Baby Bottle

Do I need a baby bottle?

If you are planning to bottle feed breastmilk or formula, then absolutely. If you’re planning to exclusively breastfeed, it can be good to have one or two as backup.

What size, what teat?

General each bottle brand has two sizes, a small (about 150ml) for newborns and younger babies, and a large (about 300mL) which they will need around 4-6 months when they start to drink more. Baby bottles have an option of slow, medium or fast flow teats, this references how big the hole in the teat is, and therefore how much milk will flow out. Newborns start with a slow flow, will need medium from about 3 months and fast from about 6 months.  

What design is best?

Finding a bottle your baby likes can take some trial and error. If you are transitioning from breastfeeding, there are bottles specifically designed to mimic the breast shape and assist the transition. If your baby likes a certain style of dummy, the bottle with the same teat may be a winner. There are a variety of materials: plastic, silicone or glass, each with their own benefits so it’s about your, and your baby’s preference.
